Summarizing the Conference

After 3 days of pure D'ness, the conference is now over. And yes, the trip was definately worth it! Putting faces to those I hadn't seen pictures of was very good, and it was very nice to talk to people in person that I previously may spent a few harsh words with on the newsgroup. It's so much easier to understand the full length of the other's meaning when one is face-to-face.

It was also funny being greeted with "Hey, I read your blog!" (Good meeting you, Paul ;). Other surprises included another Norwegian (who's even situated north of me), Brynjard.

The first and second day included the talks as can be seen on the speakers page. I personally found them all interesting, also Brad A.'s fluffy talk.

Walter (and Andrei and others) sure has many plans (and most of them good), Sean's and Kris' talks were informative and enlightening (although not very surprising to me), and I found Brad A. and Gregor's talk quite funny.

On the second day, the focus was on other types of topics, especially geared towards meta programming. Don, Kirk and Benjamin showed excellent examples of what is possible with templates and string mixins, whereas Walter (and friends) provided more good ideas and Christian showed what should become an excellent debugger for the Linux platform. I missed Bartosz' talk as I was in some negotiations.

After the talks the first day, we all went out for dinner, and I was lucky enough to get a seat at Walter's table along with Thomas Kuehne and Paul Anderson. We talked mostly about non-technical things. After the dinner, Brad A. had some beers to buy me, so some of us went to a bar for those. It was a karaoke bar, so we were only seconds from getting to see Scott up on the stage.

Saturday (that is earlier today), we had the option of just meeting to talk about D, and about 10 of us were there. There were talks about const stuff, as Walter and Andrei believes the current implementation in D 2.0 is not there yet. We talked about other issues, and most of us got some time to directly discuss our pet peeves with Walter (whether it was reflection, struct interfaces or others). We did also talk about what may be a course to get something great working in the GUI arena. We'll see what comes of that. Oh, we ate some great lunch at a Chinese restaurant.

You can see some pictures if you want.
