The return of a goal scoring hero

The other day a football event occurred that would have made me euphorius, except for the fact that I was lying down being sick. This event involved the English football team Liverpool FC. Hang on, why am I as a Norwegian capable of getting euphorius due to an English team? This has it's roots in the '60's, when NRK (the Norwegian equivalent of BBC) started to broadcast English football matches every saturday afternoon.

And as this football usually were played better than the local, it got really popular, and soon the winning or loosing by a particular English team became as important for many Norwegians, as the results for their local teams. How a favourite was chosen, was usually based on pure accident, but often due to a game where a team showed some particular excellence. I became a Liverpool fan mostly due to my bigger brother already being one.

Now back to this game on wednesday, Liverpool played Fulham in the league, and according to the stats it should be an easy win. But as Liverpool prior to this game had had a real goal drought, nothing was certain. When Robert Fowler scored fifteen minutes into the match, it was time to start celebrating. Not only was it a goal for Liverpool, it was Fowler's first after returning to Liverpool recently.

When i came of age, and in my most intense period for Liverpool fandom, Fowler was young and an incredibly competent goal scorer, setting records all over the place. He left a few years ago, after having lost some of the touch, but he was a really welcome return as his replacements haven't shown their worth just yet. Therefore, when he scored against Fulham, the local fans on Anfield thought of it as the return of God (a somewhat pretentious nickname Fowler got in his earlier years at Liverpool).

Fowler didn't score more goals against Fulham, but Liverpool did, ending the game with a scoreline of 5 - 1. Goals by Crouch, Morientes and Warnock, plus an own goal.
